INTRODUCTION
On 24th October 2006, Minister of Transportation signed the Dicision No 2264/QD-BGTVT on approval of Conversion of Vietnam Shipping Company, a member unit of Vietnam National Shipping Lines into Vinaship Joint Stock Company .
The Plenary Shareholder Congress on incoperation of Vinaship Joint Stock Company was carried out on 21st October 2006, Certificate of Business Registration No.0203002740 granted by Department of Planning and Investment of Hai phong City on 27th December 2006, with a total registered capital of VND 200 billions, 51% of which owned by State.

HISTORY
Vinaship Joint Stock Company , former Vietnam Shipping Company was established under the Decision No.2264/QD-BGTVT promulgated on 24th October 2006 by Minister of Transportation on approval of Conversion of Vietnam Shipping Company into Vinaship Joint Stock Company.
Its origin was a state-owned company established under the Decision No.694/QD-TCCB promulgated on 10th March 1984 by Minister of Transportation, then re-established under the Decision No.463/QD-TCCB promulgated on 23rd March 1993 by Minister of Transportation.
At that time, the Company’s main task was to transport domestic goods amongst sea ports, sea cum river ports, combine transport cargo between countries in South East Asia region and transport passengers from North to South Vietnam and vice versa.
In the history of over 20 years of establishment and development, VINASHIP have continuously made the highest effort to gain great achievements in production – business process and to contribute a considerable part to the cause of constructing and defending Socialist motherland.
From 1984 to 1990
At the early stages of establishment and development, VINASHIP fleet included almost vessels with main engine consumed Diesel Oil, towing barges, second hand vessels aided by the Soviet Union to transport goods and passengers domestically. To bring into play the Sea Transport’s traditions at all times, VINASHIP fleet during this period not only fulfilled the above-mentioned tasks excellently but also completed all political missions entrusted by the Party and the State, such as initiated the new line of sea and river transport through Haiphong – Ha Noi, Thuan An – Binh Tri Thien, aiming to solve timely the lack of goods and provisions for people of the Capital and remote areas in the period of the subsidized mechanism, encountered with a lot of economic difficulties.
In addition, to defend Motherland’s island and border areas, VINASHIP’s vessels took part in activities of transporting the building materials and provisions to serve the construction of Truong Sa island in 1987-1988. Especially, M.V Hoa Binh received certificate of merit awarded by Chairman of Ministerial Council (now the Government). In 1988, Company s’ Nautical Self-defense Group was offered the title of Victor Determination Unit and received the Vanguard Flag awarded by High Command of Navy.
From 1991 to 1995
This was the period that Vietnam’s economy was transferred from subsidized centralization mechanism into market one. During this period, the State reassessed the capital and handed it over to enterprises. Due to the lack of a well preparation for human force and management knowledge, the Company faced lots of difficulties in markets, in investment for fleet renewal and management method. Consequently, business results hadn’t obtained expectations yet and there’ s some years unfulfilled production plan.
From 1996 to 2000
In this period, thanks to the help and guidance of VINALINES as well as the Company’s high determination to reform itself, VINASHIP gradually overcame the weakness and shortcoming, initially gained important achievements.
VINASHIP actively re-organized executive apparatus systematically, arranged key competent cadres into important functional positions. It was the strengthened organization and suitably arranged cadre that the Company gained the stability, created the belief, enthusiasm and solidarity internally. From that point, the Company promptly got in close contact with each key management field such as Operation – Technique – Material – Financial Accounting which had a strong effect on the success of the Company.
During this period, by purchasing the vessels from member company within Vietnam Shipping Lines (VINALINES), VINASHIP owned another mass of vessels such as M.v Hung Vuong 03, M.v Thang Loi 01, 02, M.v Ha Tay, M.v Nam Dinh, M.v Ninh Binh, M.v Hung Yen, M.v Ha Giang, raising up the total DWT rapidly which was 72.987 dwt in 1999.
From 2001 to 2007
In this period, VINASHIP paid much attention to developing fleet, added to fleet list with the new ship names, such as Ha Nam, Ha Dong, Ha Tien, Binh Phuoc, My An, My Thinh, My Vuong purchased overseas, Chuong Duong purchased domestically and My Hung new-built at Bach Dang Ship Building Company.
In the process to develop the VINASHIP fleet, the outstanding feature can be shown was that beside paying attention to financial capacity and investment pace in order to not affecting to production situation , the Company accumulated good experiences for years in sale and purchase of vessel therefore every procedure of sale and purchase was carried out carefully and thoroughly all times. As a result the purchased vessels had a good quality and effective operation. Investing in the right direction not only developed the fleet in quantity but also brought new blood to the fleet. The average age of the vessels continually decreased from over 22 (in the early years of establishment) to 22 (in 1999), 20 (in 2001) and 19,4 (in 2003).
To give prominence to the role of human force-one of the important factors to decide the Business’ success or failure, the company tried its best to complete personnel organization mission, to value the talent , to arrange the proper person in the right position. Annually, beside recruiting additional young labour force from universities and junior college, the Company carried out training and re-training in order to raise the employees’ standard of professional skills, information technology, foreign languages, political arguments to meet the business’s requirements.
Vinaship Joint Stock Company, former Vietnam Shipping Company for the past 20 years has constantly strived for making the business viable, stable and developed. VINASHIP has overcome difficulties, hardships for each period to affirm its skill and spirit, and position in shipping industry.
The State and Government awarded the company‘s individuals and collective the numerous Labour Medals and other noble rewards .
POLICY
At present, the Company has carried out a policy of investment to bring new blood into the fleet, aiming at incessantly enhancing transportation quality, increasing competition capacity of the fleet by placing the orders for new-built ships in Ship Building Factory at home and broad; simultaneously expanding the transaction to purchase the second-hand ships from oversea market.
In addition, the Company also attaches special importance to the investment to broaden business scale, strengthening competition capacity of the subsidiary units such as Transportation Service Enterprise (TRANSER), Stevedore-Transportation And Service Enterprise (STS). The company is carrying out the project of constructing a container yard with the capacity of operating more than 300 TEU/day.
The company lays down as a policy building up a quality management system to offer an efficient and environment-friendly sea transportation services, minimize the risk and protect customers’ interests.
